Donations at Thanksgiving Time
It has become my custom and practice to make certain annual charitable donations at Thanksgiving time.
I do this for two reasons:
1. I believe in using my funds charitably to honor friends, family, and business associates, in lieu of sending commercial holiday greeting cards that end up in the recycling bin; and
2. I believe in Social Justice and our own personal responsibility “to repair the world” [Tikkun Olam].
This year, because there is so much hate, bigotry, violence and terrorism in the news, and always in Israel, I have made one such donation to the American Friends of Magen David Adom which helps save lives in Israel.

In addition, and because there is always hunger in the land of plenty, I have made another donation to the JFS/SOVA Community Food & Resource Program. As stated on its website:
“‘SOVA’ is a Hebrew word that means ‘eat and be satisfied.’ [¶] Much more than a food pantry, JFS { SOVA provides free groceries and an array of supportive services to over 12,000 individuals of all ages, ethnicities and religions each month [locally].”

To me, it is not a choice whether or not to give at this time; it is only a choice of where to give and how much.
I encourage you, too, to take responsibility for such social action and to join me in making your charitable donation(s) at this time [so far as you can do so] – to whomever and in whatever amount – and join me in repairing the world.
As the good book says: “Whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world,” or something like that.
The best of the holiday season to each and all of us.

The world at this time more than ever perhaps seems in need of repair for sure. However, keeping the giving somewhat closer to home I shall be making donations to assist the hungry and also to support the American Cancer Society.
My best to you and yours for the holidays….
